Living Lonely Or Living In Love (3)

Friday June 3, 2016

God offers us a loving relationship with Himself. When we experience that relationship, we will be healthy enough to establish loving relationships with others.  However, many of us have patterns of living with loneliness that need to be identified and healed in order for us to be able to respond to this wonderful invitation of a new way of life.

Loneliness has a significant impact on our sense of self-worth.  We feel solitary and hopeless. When we are lonely, we often try to please others so that we will be accepted.  Sometimes we’ve allowed others to abuse us just because we desperately wanted to be in a relationship.  In our new life in recovery, it’s generally helpful to regularly interact with a Godly mentor.  This will help us learn how to develop a healthy relationship with a person who will be comforting and uplifting.  Revealing what goes on inside us to a trustworthy person will help us connect with our innermost being and get us ready to safely walk openly and intimately with a loved one.  Joining in church fellowship is another way to feel connected, both with God and with others.

But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life!  (Jude 1:20-21 MSG)

Coming to terms with the loneliness we are experiencing is a process and we should not despise small beginnings.

I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God’s great mystery. (Colossians 2:2-3 MSG)

As long as we look to people, performance, possessions, or events to fill our loneliness, we will remain lonely.  We need to welcome the loving presence of God deep in our souls.  God created us for loving relationships and He’s committed to helping us successfully build them.
