Adjusting My Eyes To Bright Light

Wednesday August 3, 2016

Each day, as we seek Him, God gives us directives to help us walk in the light and overcome the darkness of sinful behaviour. This is good news, particularly for those of us who are learning how to live in the light after walking for many years under the convenience of darkness.

Anyone leaving a darkened room and entering into a lighted area knows how blinding the light can be.  It can be painful to our eyes and certainly limits our ability to navigate our way forward.  The same holds true at dusk when a person is moving in and out of shifting shadows.  At this time, it is wise to proceed carefully as we give our eyes time to adjust and see clearly.

You will open eyes that can’t see. You will set prisoners free.  Those who sit in darkness will come out of their cells. I will lead them along paths they had not known before.  I will guide them on roads they are not familiar with.   I will turn the darkness into light as they travel.  I will make the rough places smooth.  Those are the things I will do.  I will not desert my people. (Isaiah 42:7, 16 NIRV)

The same God who set us free from the prison of our dark sinful past promises to be with us as we go forward in the unfamiliar environment of recovery.  God gives us clear directions through His word in the Bible.  The Holy Spirit lives within us and He will guide us into the knowledge of all truth.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.  (Psalm 119:105 NLT)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.  (John 16:13 NLT)

As we get to know God, and adjust to His ways, we will notice that our way forward becomes clearer. We will be able to see and enjoy the many good things around us and experience, on a daily basis, the purposeful life God has planned for us.
