One Thing I Ask

Monday September 15, 2025

We’ve all seen the “genie in bottle” stories – what’s your one wish and then how that wish is granted – though sometimes in ways the seeker didn’t expect or even want.

King David wrote about the one thing he wanted and it’s recorded in God’s Word.

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4

King David's greatest desire was to live in God's presence each day of his life. Is our one greatest desire to be conscious of God’s presence throughout our day?

There is something so energizing and life giving to quiet our hearts, read or hear something from God’s Word, maybe take a few moments to reflect on what it means for us personally, and then have a conversation with God about it.

Too often, even those of us who want to know God find ourselves busy as the day gets going. We may read some devotional material but maybe not take time to let the truth of it settle into our thoughts and structure how we approach our day.

King David spoke about “gazing on the beauty of the Lord” and there’s nothing rushed or distracted about that is there.  I think that’s the challenge for us today – taking that focused time to just enjoy God, give thanks for His goodness in our lives, remember how He’s been there with us through so much, and to just appreciate what an amazing God it is that seeks to have a relationship with us.

Loving God, along with so many before us, including people in 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous we seek today, through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with You, praying for knowledge of Your will for us and the power to carry it out.  Amen

So let’s ask ourselves that important question in this day, “What do I desire the most?” and make adjustments so we slow down and enjoy being in the presence of the Lord. Our day will be so much better if we do.
