Hope For Today "Service"

We take a look at one of the many unsung heroes in the Bible and then remind ourselves that it's our turn now, to be people who, in very simple, ordinary ways come alongside others, and witness to God's goodness and mercy that is with us every day.

People take all kinds of risks for all kinds of reasons.  We enjoy those doing acrobatics in shows.  We are amazed at what astronauts do in space.  Just watch a boy on a skateboard and there’s risky behaviour for you!!  Jesus Christ also engaged in seemingly risky behaviour. What can we learn from that?

Jesus is so challenging for us in how He lives and then calls us to follow in always seeking the good of others. We’ll never get there on our own but God is more than willing to walk with us and show us the way.

Today we are encouraged to recognize how much influence we can have and how much good we can do even though we may not have a lot of money or prestige.

How much of our lives do we live distracted by good, but less important things, to the neglect of what is most important?

We live in a culture and time that focuses on the needs and conveniences of the individual first.  It's something we are probably not often even that aware of but it's there. We check first if something fits into our schedule, our budget, our plans for what we want to do. We also live in a world of great need and human suffering, so much of it that we hit the "off" button because it seems overwhelming to us especially in light of the resources we think we have. God is inviting us today to look with His eyes, consider with His compassionate heart, and ask Him what we should do.

The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will. Isaiah 50:4 How do these words inform my choices and behaviours today?

We are not just insignificant no-bodies running around without purpose from the day we are born until the day we die. God has gifted each of us to do good and He wants to live in us today with power and love to accomplish those good things.

Jesus believes that human beings have influence.  You and I were created to bring comfort and support and assistance to others on our life journey and to experience goodness for ourselves as we do.

This is the day in the Christian calendar when we remember Jesus who is so one with us and yet so much better than all of us. At the Last Supper, Jesus should have been the focus of honour with His friends but he’s the one who paid attention to them and who got up and humbly served them by washing their feet. How do we live according to this example?
