Our Inheritance

Monday August 4, 2014

When we think of an inheritance we usually associate it with someone dying and leaving us something in their will trusting that it will enrich our lives.  The person who died once owned the asset and is now graciously passing on that asset to us through their last will and testament.  Usually family members are the inheritors of another family member’s assets.  When Jesus died the Bible tells us that through His last will and testament, He graciously left us, an inheritance.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  (1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV)

Jesus died so that through faith in Him, we could be born again into a new life which will last forever.  We inherited this new life through our faith in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  Because He lives, we also will live.  Our inheritance in heaven can never change or decay.  The apostle Peter, who wrote these words, says we are through faith shielded by God’s mighty power because we are trusting in Him.  God has declared that, through Jesus, we are His children and He has put His Holy Spirit in our hearts guaranteeing our inheritance which is to come.

It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us. (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 NLT)

Today, as children of God, we are assured of our future inheritance.  Our loving Heavenly Father is faithful to perform all that He has promised.  Jesus said:

Because I live, you also will live. (John 14:19b NIV)
