Masks (1)

Thursday November 13, 2014

We’ve just come through another Hallowe’en day.  All over cities and towns children put on costumes and went door-to-door “trick-or-treating.”  Many of them wore masks to complete their costume.  Adults went to parties later in the evening, again dressed in costumes with masks. Everyone was seeking a good time as they pretended to be someone they were not for a little while.

Truth is, many of us don’t wait until Hallowe’en to don masks.  Sometimes we wear masks long enough that we begin to forget who we really are underneath them.   A mask, of course, is a lie.  We wrestle with many masks in our life because we don't feel comfortable being ourselves in a particular situation or relationship.  When we live behind a mask we are denying our true self who was created in God’s image.  God doesn't make junk.  God doesn't make inferior persons.  God creates us in love and invites us to let our beautifully unique personality shine out.

Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  (Matthew 5:13 NIV)

Often, getting in touch with the masks of our lives and letting our true self shine out can free us from unnecessary burdens.  The question for each of us is, do we want to meet ourselves face to face or do we want to continue hiding behind a mask?

God invites us today to understand how masks keep us from living in truth and being ourselves.  Masks also inhibit us from growing in grace and becoming the person God created us to be.

What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense.  Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself. (Ephesians 4:25 MSG)
