It's Time To Wake Up

Wednesday December 10, 2014

In many churches on Sunday of this week, the second candle in the Advent wreath was lit.  This is the season of Advent.  This is a time to think about what it means that the God who made the heavens and earth has come close to us.  These are days to reflect on how we are living and to allow our hearts to be drawn closer to God.

God’s coming close sometimes feels like an intrusion or an interruption because so often we are filled with our own plans and preparations – particularly with Christmas approaching.  It’s not just the busyness of the season that God needs to break through in our lives, it’s also the half-truths we live with because we are only beginning to learn how to see life through God’s eyes.  Advent is a time to admit that we don’t know much and we often settle for what we see before us. Advent is a time to invite God to wake us up and allow the ideas and fantasies we’ve lived with for so long to move away.  God wants us to make space for what is real and alive and good.  The God who loves us with an unfailing and unconditional love longs to break through the clutter of our lives.  He desires for us to know that He has come close to us and will give us the freedom and strength we need through this Advent season.

And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light … Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. (Romans 13:11-12, 14 NIV)

In 12-step circles, Advent is a time to really live Step 11 – We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry it out.  Let’s practice this spiritual principle today.
