Good Counselors (4)
Thursday August 6, 2015

Wise counselors are God's gift to us as we journey forward in recovery with God. We can learn from them. We can receive supportive strength from them. God has provided us with examples of the type of people we should be looking to for truth telling and support.

Since coming to know and trust the Lord Jesus to save us and bring us to new life is foundational to our recovery, we want to be sure that the person we choose to guide us also has a strong and vibrant relationship with God. We want to learn from them how to trust and grow in our relationship with God. As we come to honour our relationship with God first, we will then learn how to walk with one another. The daily honouring of God first is the secret to a healthy recovery that a wise sponsor will support us to practice.

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:5-7)
People who've walked with God for a while are humble people who tell the truth with confidence and kindness. We won't always like hearing the truth they have to tell us, but when we observe their kindness and their steady walk in the face of challenges, we will know we can depend on their advice. Truth keeps us safe and in a moment when our old way of thinking challenges truth, caring sponsors show their maturity by honoring what they know is right more than being popular with us.

Love and truth form a good leader; sound leadership is founded on loving integrity. “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” (Proverbs 20:28 MSG, Philippians 2:2-4 NLT)
Thank you God for the wise counsel you provide for us in Your word and for faithful friends who show us how to learn from your word and build healthy relationships with you and others. Help us to be humble and learn to follow wise counsel in all our activities today.
