How do we learn to know and follow God?

--Trust God and wait patiently and peacefully for His plans to unfold.
--Learn to meditate on God’s Word and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as He teaches us.
--Be willing to walk according to God’s principles and leave all the consequences to Him.
--Be willing to accept God's discipline with thanksgiving.

If we want to get to know God we must come to Him in sincerity and honesty. We must confess that we are sinners and that we have been living in self-centered ways.  We must ask Jesus to come into our hearts and invite Him to be the Lord of our lives.  Only as we live in relationship with God through Jesus Christ will we find life to be satisfactory.  He has the plan.  He has the know-how.  He has the power.  He is willing to generously give us all that He has for us.

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?  Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. (Romans 8:31-33 NLT)

To know God we must know His Word as recorded in the Bible.  God has given us the Holy Spirit to help us interpret His Word and counsel us in how we should apply it to our lives.  By reading God's word and opening our hearts to listen to Him and doing what He says, we will build a purposeful life giving relationship with Him and His Son.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105 NLT)

God is constantly inviting us to walk with Him.   God speaks and we recognize His voice much more clearly as get to know Him.  We can discern when things match up with His character and when they don’t.   Our knowledge of God increases as our recognition of His love for us increases.  Giving the Lord total control of our decisions, our time, our talents, and our possessions is another key to knowing God.

For you are great and perform wonderful deeds.  You alone are God. Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.  (Psalm 86:10-11 NLT)

Becoming interested in the things that interest God is also important in getting to know Him.   In a healthy relationship each person cares about the things that matter to the other.  God cares about us and all the details of our lives matter to Him.  Do we know what matters to God?  Do we care about those things? God’s Spirit wants to speak to us about matters that are bigger than the small world of our circumstances.
