Sexual Purity

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?  By living according to your word.  (Psalm 119:9 NIV)

We need to be crystal clear where we stand.  If we are engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage we are saying “No” to God.  We cannot call ourselves followers of Jesus and disobey what He has so clearly communicated to us.  We are told repeatedly that if we engage in sex outside of marriage we will have no part in the Kingdom of God and we are sinning against the Holy Spirit.  Many people who enter recovery to seek victory over drugs and alcohol find themselves relapsing back into their addictive lifestyles when they refuse to obey God’s teaching on sexual purity.  When we disobey God, we give the devil permission to function in our lives and he takes advantage of every invitation.

For those of us not currently engaging in sexual impurity we are challenged to be very careful what we condemn in others while tolerating certain conduct among ourselves.  God says these are improper for His holy people: foolish talk, the way we think, the jokes we tell, the offhanded comments we make. These range in the category of impurity of mind and God warns us clearly that if we engage in such activity we will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God.  We risk eternal punishment.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.  Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (Ephesians 5:3-5 NIV)

Are these impossible standards?  On our own, YES!  But God is faithful to do in us what we cannot do for ourselves.

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God will make this happen, for he who calls you is faithful. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NLT)

Come Holy Spirit, and make my life holy and acceptable to God.
